Book 2 Post 2: Holy Envy
I chose to read Holy Envy by Barbara Taylor because of my curiosity revolving religion and it turned out to be a truly insightful book. Taylor starts out by reviewing her past history with religion, leading up to when she becomes a university religion 101 professor. I really respect the way that Taylor chooses her words to describe religion and how she chooses to relay information to others. She has a very respectful way of informing students and taking part in discourse without being too closed minded. I also found that Barbara is the perfect person to discuss modern day religions because she has had so many interactions with young college students.
Many of the questions that she addresses in the book are questions that I have often found myself thinking about as well. For example, Taylor delves into the many different religions and something she calls the "holy envy". Taylor describes the holy envy as the feeling she felt when comparing aspects of different religions and how she felt jealousy for certain disciplines. A quote that really spoke to me about holy envy was when Taylor said, "what I see in the neighbor's yard does not belong to me, but it shows me things in my own yard that I might otherwise have overlooked."
Although I am not religious, this book taught me so much about the many different religions. It was cool to read through the book and go through a similar experience as if I was one of Taylor's students. I think the structure of the book was very well thought out. I liked how the last chapter was titled "Final Exam" where Barbara talks about some of the experiences the students had in the class as well as her thoughts on teaching the course after many years.
Cam,
ReplyDeleteI also really like that quote of "holy envy" because it really does apply to so much in life - people might not realize what they have because they are so preoccupied with what others are doing and what others have.
Cam, I too am curious about other religions. I grew up with an Atheist mom and a Catholic dad so I had a unique introduction to religion! It is so fascinating to hear about different cultures and beliefs. Barbara Taylor seems like someone who is so insightful and would have a great well-informed perspective. Glad you enjoyed the book.
ReplyDeleteHey Cam,
ReplyDeleteI consider myself to be a spiritual person, so I can relate to your reasons for choosing the book I like learning new things about religions because they have useful advice and techniques that you can apply to life. I never heard the word holy envy, but I enjoyed reading about it in your post as it can be applied to times like these.
Hi Cam, I liked the way you described the concept of holy envy. I am not very religious, but this description made me realize I have observed this effect happening around me. Comparison like this does not only happen in a religious sense. That has been easier for me to observe throughout my life. However, this envy over different aspects of religion puts into perspective how people should focus on "what's in their own yard" more often.
ReplyDeleteHey Cam, my dad always tells me that "everyone has their own god." He means this in the sense that, everyone understands religion, god, and life in their own specific ways, holding values in some things and maybe disregarding others. I totally agree with you, I am not a very religious person either, but the way you present the book seems like a very fascinating read. Thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteI think its very important for people to be aware of others religions and keep an open mind to things they have never considered. For example, when learning about my friends religions I like to keep an open mind because it is interesting to see how they perceive their world through their religions. I think this book sounds like it offers a lens for others to look into religions they may have never considered before.
ReplyDeleteHi Cam! I wouldn't consider myself a very religious person either but I was intrigued by this book. I think part of the reason that I was intrigued was that Taylor did not focus on one specific religion. I also really liked the quote you included about the holy envy.
ReplyDeleteHey Cam, thank you for reading this book and writing a thoughtful response. Even though you're not religious I was glad you still find learning about them interesting.
ReplyDeleteHey Cam, I really enjoyed your review to this book and feel that the quote that you chose really brought it all together. I think it is very interesting to read about and learn about different religions. Taylor seems like she really thought this book through not only for readers in general, but also for her students.
ReplyDeleteHi Cam, thanks for writing this great review. I think that it is interesting that you read this book even though you are not religious. I imagine you were able to gain some pretty interesting insights since you were unbiased! I also like how the author seems to look at other religions with respect- something that doesn't happen all the time.
