Book 1, Post 2

American Like Me is unlike any book that I have read before. Each memoir held a unique, intriguing story that contributed to the main theme of the collection. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I believe each story sticks to the theme of being true to yourself while assimilating in America. Each writer has their own style of storytelling which kept my interested throughout the whole book. I enjoyed how some authors chose the humorous route while others detailed deep emotions.

What stood out to me the most was how I was able to relate in some way to each individual story. I mentioned this in my first post, but I was able to see my childhood and personal experiences so similarly to the majority of these stories. The collection covers almost every single issue of growing up in America when you don't quite fit in initially and that's why I think it is an important book that should be read by young children who would find similarity in the struggles told. Reading through each story made me feel proud to have grown up engulfed in culture and differences.

I realize that there are so many key lessons that can change the way we view others. I think that the world could really benefit from spreading each of these individual stories. It could really change this upcoming generation for the better. From learning to be more accepting and less judgmental to coming to terms with your own identity, American Like Me, has the potential to really inspire many people across America.
